Hsieh Su-wei ends long singles title drought in Dubai’s Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge

17-12-2016

DUBAI // Struggling with ankle injuries for the latter part of 2016, Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Su-wei has brought the year to a close with her first singles titles in more than 13 months, dismissing Russian teenager Natalia Vikhlyantseva in a mere 59 minutes in the final of the ITF $100,000 (Dh367,000) Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge.

Just over an hour after her 6-2, 6-2 win over Vikhlyantseva, Hsieh was back on court for the doubles finals, but failed in her bid to match Cagla Buyukakcay’s double of 2015.

The 2013 Wimbledon and 2014 French Open doubles champion, playing alongside Russian Valeria Savinykh, lost 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 to Nina Stojanovic and Mandy Minella in her second final of the day.

Hsieh’s last singles triumph came in November, 2015, when she defeated Yulia Putintseva to win the ITF $100,000 in Nanjing, China. The former world No 23 had reached the final of the ITF $100,000 in Marseille in June, but lost in straight sets to Danka Kovinic.
